    Welcome to our February newsletter. We have had a busy start to 2018 and are looking forward to a good year. Our first task for the year was to bid for the new Healhtwatch Barnet contract which was due to start in April. In the meantime, we have been very busy in lots of different areas.

    This was an announced E&V visit as part of a planned set of visits to observe the quality of care provided. After an original visit on 18 July 2017, the purpose of this visit was to meet with the manager and clarify issues from the previous visit.

    We know from our conversations with the public that some patients report feeling rushed during appointments and struggling to make themselves heard. Your local Healthwatch are promoting tips that could help you get the most out of visiting your GP.

    Healthwatch Barnet sought the views of home care agency managers and home carers to paint a more comprehensive picture of the experiences and challenges around delivering home care services locally.

    Our team of staff and trained volunteers conducted an announced Enter and View visit to Cricklewood Health Centre as part of our planned strategy to look at a range of Health and Social Care services within the London Borough of Barnet.

    Healthwatch Camden co-ordinated work by five local Healthwatch organisations, in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington to help local residents have a say in plans for urgent and emergency care in North London.

    We asked students at the Success Festival in Middlesex University, about their access to dental services since starting university and received responses from 43 students. The festival covered a wide range of health and well-being topics.

    This project set out to explore awareness and use of different medical services available in Barnet, amongst residents attending a GP surgery. Millway Medical Practice was approached as a key
    location to carry out this project.

    We were alerted to difficulties in accessing/registering with GP services in Barnet, especially for people without a permanent address. We decided to research the registration process, by contacting the 57 GPs in Barnet through mystery shopping.

The contract is initially for 1 year so will be reviewed again in early 2019. But we are delighted to be continuing!

    This is a Middlesex University & Healthwatch Barnet Collaborative report as a result of four MSc students working with HW to understand their role and help them better communicate and engage with young people aged 18 - 30 years.

    In March 2018, at a Student Success Festival, HW spoke with students at Middlesex University to find out what their health priorities were. We found out that the top priority for students were mental health services followed by access to GP services.

    In June, Healthwatch attended the SOS – Stamp out Stigma! Conference, organised by the Hendon School Mental Health Wellbeing Team. With over 300 attendees, it was a big success in thinking about how mental health stigma can be tackled in schools.

    The GP Patient Survey has been conducted by Ipsos MORI, on behalf of NHS England, since 2007. A questionnaire is sent annually between January and March to patients registered with GP practices across England and results are reported in July/ August.

    This announced E&V visit was part of a planned strategy to look at a range of Sheltered Housing / Extra Care Units within Barnet to obtain a better idea of the services provided. Wood Court provides accommodation and support to older people .

    Many patients Healthwatch engaged with were still not aware of the new GP Enhanced Access Service provided in the borough. We therefore researched all 52 websites to explore how consistent the information provided was.
